Summer Reading Programs have become an essential tool in combating the "summer slide," a phenomenon where students lose some of the achievements gained during the school year. Our library’s initiatives aim to engage all-aged youth through a blend of creative programming and interactive activities that make reading both fun and educational. These programs not only help maintain and improve literacy skills but also encourage social interaction and community involvement, making them a vital resource for lifelong learning. Our goal is to inspire young minds to explore new worlds through books, ensuring that the joy of reading extends beyond the classroom and into the heart of summer.

The 2026 Summer Reading Program, titled “Unearth a Story,” invites readers of all ages to embark on an exciting literary journey that digs deep into the rich soil of storytelling. This year’s theme encourages participants to explore narratives that reveal hidden histories, unearth forgotten tales, and dive into the layers of human experience that shape our world. Whether it's through fiction, non-fiction, or poetry, the program aims to inspire curiosity and foster a love for reading by connecting readers with stories that challenge their perspectives and ignite their imaginations. By participating in “Unearth a Story,” readers will not only discover new books but also gain a deeper understanding of the world and the diverse narratives that contribute to its tapestry.

What are the benefits of Summer Reading Programming:

  • Motivation to Read: Summer reading programs inspire youth to engage with books, fostering a love for reading that can last a lifetime.

  • Positive Attitudes: Participants develop favorable views toward reading, books, and the library as a welcoming and enriching environment.

  • Skill Maintenance: By actively reading during the summer, youth retain and improve their reading skills, combating the "summer slide."

  • Discovery and Cooperation: These programs provide opportunities for young readers to explore new interests and learn the value of teamwork and collaboration.
